How to get help when it’s not wanted
Most of the time the dependant is well aware of his/her problem. But they are so out of touch with themselves that they go into a total denial. The very thought of abstaining from using the drug scares them, because they cannot imagine their lives without the substance. Normal discussions and even repeated family debates and arguments about it do not seem to have any impact on the person.
I am quite sure you know the feeling.
If you know someone that is addicted to alcohol or drugs, we have a tried and tested method to get the person to face his/her problem, called the Intervention. This is to get the person to realize that he/she is destroying him/herself and people precious to him/her. See page 10 of ‘Overcome It’ for a clearer explanation of the intervention.
